Our Valuable Team Members
Alex Fair, MS,Co-Founder and CEO
Attempting to crowdfund his own fourth health tech startup, Alex found that there was no dedicated healthcare crowdfunding platform and Kickstarter wouldn’t even allow healthcare projects. The only successful healthcare project he could find was a movie about how bad the healthcare system was and ideas like his were not getting funded. So, over dinner he and a few healthcare innovators and investors mapped out a plan to make Crowdfunding work for healthcare. The next day he called his friend and tech co-founder Mike Pence, who also happened to have been the original developer of Kickstarter and the rest, as they say, is history.
While working on his Ph.D. in Pathology at the Medical College of Wisconsin, Alex took a break to found his first health tech startup. That first company was bought by a company that had just gone public and he has never looked back, starting new companies and running them ever since. He still wants to cure cancer and fix healthcare, but now he does so by enabling hundreds of new companies to get to market faster and more reliably. He has also served as adviser or mentor to dozens of startups, corporations, accelerators, and governments; designed the NYC HealthTech Pilot program; and developed H2NYC, the world’s largest Health Innovation meetup group that has helped hundreds of new ideas in healthcare get found and funded faster and was the genesis of MedStartr.
“If you have the will, we have the way” – Alex
Mike PenceCo-Founder and CTO
Mike originally Joined Alex’s team at FairCareMD not long after he left Kickstarter’s initial development team. He was the lead developer at Kickstarter initially and went on to develop the highly successful Artist-focused music marketplace TuneCore. In 2010 he then joined Alex in his FairCareMD venture, building out the MVP and 100 iterations as the two tried to hack price transparency for healthcare (still a work in progress.) A developer who understands business needs and performs miracles regularly, Mike is a Ruby on Rails Guru level programmer that speaks publicly on the topic and has contributed significantly to the open source community. After the JOBS act passed in 2012 Mike started building out our new crowdfunding platform, reinvented for healthcare. He also utilized the code base to help out dozens of other platforms get going through his consulting company, gaining vast experience in the space and helping many new ideas get found and funded faster. Now that title II of the Jobs act is a reality and platforms like Angel.co are doing equity crowdfunding without issue, Mike is building out our next version and it should be great!
